Discover the magic of Barbados with Emerald Cruises, the birthplace of rum and the culinary heart of the Caribbean.

Our Caribbean cruises often feature excursions or set sale from Bridgetown, the vibrant capital of Barbados, while many depart from the city. Here, you’ll find plenty to explore before you embark on your luxury yacht cruise. In this guide, discover the top spots to visit in the ‘land of the flying fish,’ from stunning beaches and iconic landmarks to exciting attractions and charming restaurants.

When is the best time to visit Barbados?

Barbados is renowned for its year-round warm weather, but many consider the prime time to visit to be between December and April. This period marks the dry season, where you can expect sunny days and minimal rainfall, with average daily temperatures ranging from 29°C to 30°C.

Visiting in May is also a good option. Although there’s a higher likelihood of rain, temperatures can reach up to 31°C. This month offers a better chance of spotting sea turtles. However, our cruises generally run between late November and April, so you’d have to make plans to stay in the area after the cruise for the chance to see sea turtles.

From June to November, Barbados experiences short, sharp downpours and an increased risk of storms and hurricanes. The additional rainfall makes these months more humid. However, there are still compelling reasons to visit, such as the vibrant Crop Over Festival, which takes place from June to August.

Beaches in Barbados

Barbados is considered one of the most picturesque Caribbean islands. It’s famous for its beautiful beaches, where you’ll find sugar-soft sand and crystal-clear waters. Here are three of our top picks for you to explore:

Crane Beach

Discover the enchanting Crane Beach, nestled on the southeast coast of Barbados, just 15 miles from Bridgetown. This stunning paradise, framed by majestic 80ft cliffs, boasts pristine, soft white sand and basks in the glorious Caribbean sunshine, making it an ideal spot for sunbathers to unwind.

Pebbles Beach

Just a 25-minute walk or 10-minute taxi journey from the lively heart of Bridgetown, you’ll find Pebbles Beach, a true slice of paradise. The calm, inviting waters of the Caribbean Sea are perfect for water activities. Overlooking Carlisle Bay, this area is also a haven for snorkelers and scuba divers, with six fascinating shipwrecks beneath the surface to explore.

Pebbles Beach isn’t just about water sports; it’s also famous for a unique local tradition. Before the sun rises, grooms from the nearby Garrison stables bring their racehorses to bathe in the warm waters. It’s a popular sight for locals and visitors alike and offers a perfect photo opportunity.

Complete your visit by grabbing a delicious fish sandwich, known as a cutter, from one of the fish stands just off the beach.

Silver Sands Beach

Nestled on the south coast of Barbados in the parish of Christ Church lies the gorgeous Silver Sands Beach. This coastal gem is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, with its refreshing breezes creating impressive waves and perfect conditions for windsurfing and kite surfing.

Beyond the thrill of the waves, Silver Sands Beach offers serene spots for relaxation. Shaded picnic benches under the trees provide a welcome respite from the sun, where you can enjoy a refreshing drink and a leisurely lunch. The pristine white sand dunes add to the beach’s natural beauty, creating a picturesque backdrop for your visit.

Landmarks and historic sites in Barbados

In addition to its stunning beaches, Barbados is home to a wealth of famous landmarks and historic sites ready for you to explore. Here are some top places to see while visiting this vibrant city.

Emancipation Statue

Situated just east of Bridgetown at the J.T.C Ramsay roundabout, the Emancipation Statue is a must-see landmark. Often referred to as ‘Bussa’ by locals, in honour of the slave who led a revolt against slavery in 1816, this bronze sculpture was erected in 1985 and symbolises the “breaking of the chains.”

National Heroes Square

National Heroes Square stands as a poignant reminder of the past. Once a site where plantation owners subjected slaves to confinement in cages, it has transformed into a place of remembrance for locals to honour their ancestors. The square also features a cenotaph commemorating Barbadians who lost their lives in World Wars I and II. Additionally, visitors can admire the picturesque Parliament Buildings, constructed in the Neo-Gothic style during the Victorian era.

St. Michael’s Cathedral

Just a short stroll east of National Heroes Square lies St. Michael’s Cathedral, an Anglican church with a rich history. Reconstructed in 1789 after the original building was destroyed by a hurricane in 1780, the cathedral is crafted from coral stone and features beautiful stained-glass windows. Inside, you’ll find a marble baptismal font dating back to the 17th century. Officially designated as a cathedral in 1825, it now houses the largest pipe organ in the Caribbean.

Visit the Tropical Garden

Plant enthusiasts should plan a visit to the Tropical Garden in Saint George. This lush paradise spans six acres and boasts thousands of Caribbean plants and tropical flowers alongside spectacular local garden artwork. Wander through this tranquil haven, admiring everything from vibrant orchids to delicate ferns, and soak in the breathtaking views of the nearby sugarcane fields. Before you leave, be sure to savour the renowned rum punch – it’s a must-try.

Visit the Barbados Wildlife Reserve

Nestled within a mahogany forest in Saint Peter parish, directly across from Farley Hill National Park, the Barbados Wildlife Reserve is a must-see destination. This reserve is home to a diverse array of animals, many of which roam freely in their natural habitats. Visitors can marvel at red-footed tortoises, Patagonian maras and Cuban rock iguanas. A particular highlight is the green monkeys, which are a favourite among guests.
